Dunbar Road Travelogue: Paris and London
If you’ve been a follower and regular reader of The Orange Thing, then you know how much travel inspires and enlightens me. Traveling to Palm Beach and Miami as a child with my family shaped my love of interiors and entertaining, and it’s with this sense of place and a respect for my Cuban heritage that Dunbar Road Design was born. But whether I’m returning to Florida or exploring French flea markets for the first time, the art, culture and beauty I discover while traveling influence and broaden my work as an interior designer.
This was especially true of a recent trip to Paris and London where we sourced items for clients and visited some of our favorite showrooms. Reflecting on my time there, I find I repeatedly use the term, timeless elegance. It so perfectly describes the time-honored, sophisticated interiors and architectural details I saw on my travels, which while some were centuries’ old, felt modern and fresh. Traveling to cities like Paris and London, rich in history, reveals their mastery in layering heirlooms with contemporary discoveries. These places skillfully blend mismatched furniture and textiles to create cohesive, inviting spaces. This approach embodies the essence of interior design, showcasing the ability to achieve an effortlessly curated look. Whether mixing heirlooms with new finds, or sourcing textiles from opposite sides of the world, I love helping my clients style a home that is uniquely their own.
Our time in Paris and London was a whirlwind of exploration, reconnecting with old friends, meeting new ones, and immersing ourselves in everything these vibrant cities had to offer. Here are some of the standout moments from our unforgettable trip. I’m can’t wait to go back!
PARIS
Las Puces Flea Market
- This place is an absolute gem when it comes to sourcing unique pieces for clients. From grand furniture finds to smaller treasures like antique ceramics and decorative objects, it truly offers a little bit of everything. I spent hours wandering through the stalls, looking for those special items that could add a distinct touch to my clients' spaces. There's nothing quite like stumbling upon that perfect piece you didn’t know you needed!
Saint-Germain-des-Prés
- Being able to walk from my hotel to one of Paris's renowned design districts was such a treat. Saint-Germain-des-Prés is filled with familiar names from the wallpaper and fabric world, but it also offers discoveries from boutique brands that aren't as widely known. The inspiration was endless, and I’m so excited to bring these creative ideas back to my clients.
Hotel Relais Christine
- This charming boutique hotel tucked away in the heart of the Left Bank quickly became my Parisian haven. To get to the lobby, you first walk through the most picturesque courtyard that feels like a secret garden. Inside, the décor is both elegant and cozy, like staying at an old friend’s beautiful home. Every corner of the hotel, from the inviting lobby to the intimate rooms, radiates warmth and character—just the sort of place you’d want to come back to after a day of sourcing treasures for clients.
LouLou's
- After a long day of sourcing, LouLou’s is the perfect place to unwind over a late lunch. The rain kept us inside, but the chic second floor of the restaurant made for a perfect spot. The interiors were stunning, the food even better—delicious pastas, pizzas, and perhaps a dessert to celebrate the day's discoveries. Whether sitting indoors or out, it’s a wonderful reward after a busy day.
Chez Fernand Christine
- This hidden gem was just steps from my hotel and turned out to be my favorite meal in Paris. Chez Fernand Christine is the kind of bistro that feels like home, warm and welcoming with a true Parisian atmosphere. The food was exceptional, and the unpretentious, cavern-like setting was so inviting. The staff went above and beyond with recommendations, and I left feeling like I’d experienced a truly authentic slice of Paris.
LONDON
Kenwood House
- One of the best parts of being in the UK is having access to some of the world’s most extraordinary historic homes, each rich with timeless inspiration. Kenwood House, in particular, holds a special place in my heart. Walking through its grand rooms, I found endless design ideas—from the stunning, bold colors on the ceilings to the intricate details that adorn both the interiors and exteriors. The way history and elegance come together here is something I’ll definitely carry with me when designing for clients, blending the old with the new to create something truly unique.
Pimlico Road
- Pimlico Road is a must-visit for designers and design enthusiasts alike. It’s always my first stop in London when sourcing for clients. There’s something special about visiting the fabric, wallpaper, and furniture studios I’ve always adored in this iconic area. The blend of antiques and contemporary pieces makes it the ultimate destination for finding unique treasures that bring a project to life. Every visit offers fresh inspiration, and sourcing here in London just has a different energy that I absolutely love.
Number Sixteen Hotel
- This boutique hotel in South Kensington is truly exceptional. I can’t say enough about the rooms, the facilities, and the incredible service. Kit Kemp of Firmdale Hotels has an unmatched talent for designing the coziest and most inviting spaces, and this one, in particular, is especially endearing to me. From the thoughtful details to the warm ambiance, it’s the perfect blend of comfort and style—an inspiring retreat after long days of exploring the city.
The Twenty Two
- The Twenty Two is a stunning combination of a hotel, restaurant, and private members club. We had the pleasure of hosting a private dinner there, and the experience left us smitten with its chic, sophisticated vibe. Designed like a stylish, eccentric townhouse, it’s perfect for an elegant meal. From what I glimpsed of the facilities, the rooms are equally impressive—blending elegance with a touch of glamour.
Julies Restaurant
- Julies, recently reopened, has quickly become a favorite for those in the know. As a designer, I’m always on the lookout for inspiring spaces, and this one certainly fits the bill. The restaurant offers a cozy, neighborhood vibe that’s perfect for relaxing after a day of sourcing and client meetings. Its dimly lit, creatively designed interior is a feast for the eyes and a wonderful source of inspiration. It’s a place where every detail—from the décor to the ambiance—offers fresh ideas for interior design projects and client sourcing.
