Spring Forward

Spring Forward

It’s the return to Daylight Savings time, and I couldn’t be happier about it! We’ve already had a taste of spring weather here in Dallas with sunshine and highs in the 70s. These glimpses of spring, along with the extra hour of daylight, fill me with such excitement and hope for all that the season ahead brings – time spent outdoors finding inspiration in the world around us. From the buds on the dogwood trees to the buckets of tulips in grocery store entryways, all signs point to the new season that is well on its way.

I recently spoke to a local garden club here in Dallas about design inspiration, and I was reminded of how inspiration is found wherever we choose to look for it. For me, it’s often in nature. In my design work, I always consider the landscape surrounding a home, and using color is one of the best ways bring the outdoors into interior spaces. Orange (of course) and yellow – the colors of sunshine! I’m also drawn to blue, green and pink colorways as they reflect the beauty of flowers, shrubs and trees.

I credit my parents for instilling in me a love of the natural world. The Dallas Arboretum and Botanical Garden is one of my favorite places to take in the beauty of the season (my dad was one of the arboretum’s founding board members), and this time of year is the best. The arboretum is known for its annual Dallas Blooms event, the largest floral festival in the Southwest, and the tulips are incredible! It’s the perfect place to bring a picnic and enjoy the day.

While I love Dallas in the spring, it’s also one of my favorite times of the year to travel, and I’m looking forward to a trip to Florida in a few weeks. When I’m in Miami, I always try to spend time at the Vizcaya Gardens. The architecture, art and gardens are stunning and provide so much inspiration. I know I’ll be packing a few of my favorites for this trip: a floral dress by Catherine Prevost (I love her Palm Beach shop), one of Colores Collective’s new cane tote bags (with a lip gloss inside, always) and a sunhat.

I hope the upcoming season has you dreaming – in color! – of all the beauty that surrounds us this time of year.
